Learn More about Road Cycling in the Olympics

History

Road cycling was the first mode to be contested upon a bicycle. The competition took place on May 31, 1868, at the Parc de Saint-Cloud in Paris. Thus, the British James Moore is considered the first cyclist to win a race. The following year, Moore wrote his name again in the story. He triumphed in the first race of the sport between cities. The British took 10.25 to go the 123 kilometers between Paris and Rouen.

With the popularity in high, the road cycling was part of the program of the first edition of Olympic Games from information of bicyclebazzar, in Athens-1896. The first race went the same way as the traditional marathon of the first Games. The cyclists left Athens, went to the city of Marathon and returned to the Greek capital.

Although he participated in Athens-1896, road cycling was not present in the following three editions: Paris-1900, St. Louis-1904 and London-1908. The return took place at the Stockholm Games in 1912. Since then, there have been no further interruptions in the participation of the sport. The women, however, only entered the race in Los Angeles-1984, with the individual road race.

Bikes for road races are usually made with carbon frame and other lightweight materials. The weight does not reach 7kg. In addition, the handlebar is deliberately low, which allows the cyclist a good energy saving, in addition to a more favorable aerodynamics.

Curiosities

Family Medals

Winning an Olympic medal is a feat achieved by a few. For the Swedish family Pettersson, however, the podium was somewhat banal at the Tokyo-1964 and Mexico City-1968 Games. In Japan, three of the Pettersson brothers returned home with medals. Gösta, the most famous of them, Erik and Sture took the Swedish team to bronze in the road race against the clock.

It was not enough for the Pettersson. Four years later, in Mexico, they did even better.Sven Harmin, the other member of the medal team in 1964, was replaced by Tomas Pettersson. With the family complete, the Swedes improved the result of the previous edition and won the silver. To complete the party at the Swedish house, Gösta still took a bronze in the road test.

The Super Dutch

Her name is enormous: Leontien Martha Henrica Petronella Zijlaard-van Moorsel. Higher than that alone the achievements of this Dutch cyclist. Born on March 22, 1970, van Moorsel is the biggest winner in the history of road cycling. In Sidney-2000 and Athens-2004, the Dutch won no fewer than 3 gold medals in the sport.

The Dutch were gold in the endurance race and the time trial in Sydney 2000 and repeated the title in the time trial in Athens-2004. The results would already put the cyclist in the story, but she still increased her success on the track. In addition to the 3 diamonds on the road, van Moorsel still conquered a gold (individual chase) and a silver (race for points) in Sydney-2000 and a bronze (individual chase) in Athens-2004.
